Building Hope In Uncertain Times

“Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce… seek the peace and prosperity of the city… because if it prospers, you too will prosper” Jeremiah 29:5-7. When the world was in turmoil, and God’s people were displaced, the Lord told them, “Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.” In difficult times, God didn’t tell them to wait. He told them to build. Today, while conflict and uncertainty rise across the nations we serve, we are helping our partners do exactly that: building dorms, ministry centers, dining halls, and churches. Hope is still under construction.

This month, we would like to highlight several projects that resonate with the Lord’s instruction to build homes and plant gardens. The kingdom of God shines very brightly when things are dark.

Myanmar Boys’ Dormitory

This picture shows the new boys’ dormitory in Myanmar. The original dormitory was severely damaged by age and earthquakes. This new building will be home to more than 50 orphan boys, with beautiful rooms, study areas, small group spaces, bedrooms, and modern restrooms (you know they will appreciate that). It’s a total miracle that Love Children’s Home was able to build the new dormitory.

Myanmar Gardens

These gardens provide food for the orphans and income for the ministry. Rebecca shared that her daughter Rosemary set up a separate bank account for the garden business, and those funds are used exclusively for the orphans’ birthdays, sports, and other extracurricular activities. We are impressed by how the team in Myanmar maximizes opportunities. They are very smart and talented leaders.

Miracle Hall in Myanmar

While we were in Myanmar, we learned of the damaged dining hall at Miracle Children’s Home, the orphanage Abraham leads. The original dining hall was a temporary bamboo structure. Because of your generosity, we were able to invest in building the foundation for the new Miracle Hall, which will be a facility where the orphans will eat and play. We are praying that provision will come for the completion of this project.

Nepal Ministry Center

Construction continues on the ministry center in Nepal. This picture shows where the church will be. The ground floor will include a children’s church space, ministry school, medical clinic, and library. The original church here was severely damaged by earthquakes. This local church in Chitwan already serves as a place where people receive food, spiritual nourishment, and hope for their lives. The new building will serve them well.

Cuba Church Construction

They aren’t allowed to build new churches in Cuba, so they use their homes for worship. Garages become sanctuaries, and backyards become children’s church. Cuba is facing a humanitarian crisis, with many people going hungry. Even in the face of this, the church continues to advance. Pastor Manuel is seen here cooking for people who will receive food from the church, while his team works on expanding the church in the backyard of his home.

Andaman Islands Orphanage Fence

The fence at Love Children’s Home has been only partially completed for many years. It is important that the fence be finished for the safety of the orphans, to keep wild animals out so they can grow fruit and vegetables, and to secure the property lines. We received a miracle partnership with another missions organization that invested in this project, allowing it to be completed to 5 feet. We are trusting God for funds to raise the fence to 10 feet in the future.

Kenya Ministry Center

Regina leads a ministry that includes a preschool in a very challenging area of Nairobi. They have a partially finished building that needs to be completed so the children can move into it for school. Their current space has been destroyed by floodwaters. We are trusting God for the funds to complete this project.

All of these construction projects represent peace and prosperity for people in very difficult situations. Here are some grateful recipients! Thank you for making it possible!

Myanmar Mission Trip

I just returned from Myanmar with a team that included my son Jude, who celebrated his golden birthday by turning 13 on the trip. I have four kids, and now all of them have been to Myanmar. It was very special to have 150 orphans and leaders praying over him on his birthday. This trip has become a Gustafson rite of passage. On a trip like this, a teenager can have a real encounter with God that shapes them into adulthood. My mentor, Dennis Nonnemacher, once shared with me that a high percentage of teenagers who go on mission trips end up in full-time ministry. I’m not sure what Jude will do with his life, but I do know this: God touched him in a special way, and the world is now on Jude’s heart.

Here are two highlights from the trip:

Leadership — Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Rosemary are world-class leaders who love the kids, carry incredible vision, and are saturated in the presence of God.

Miracles — We heard several miracle stories. One was about a boy who suffered from night terrors and panic attacks after witnessing people being killed in his village during the civil war. Other boys would bring him to the house in the middle of the night, where they prayed over him until he was healed. Another boy had severely diseased eyes. They prayed over him until they witnessed a physical miracle, and now he is completely healed.

Jude journaled on our way home, and finished his entry with this prayer, which he gave me permission to share:

Lord God, I pray for all of these children and young adults, that You will keep them safe and help them know that You are our Savior. Let them know how important they are to me and that I will always carry them in my heart. I pray that You will heal these children, protect them, and provide for them, Lord. I also pray that You will give me the opportunity to see each of these children and young adults again. Thank You for being our Father and for always loving us. This trip would not have been possible without Your glory. In Your name we pray, Amen.

Food For Thought

“You planned evil against me, but God used those same plans for my good…”

—Genesis 50:20 MSG

God can turn it around in your life. The very thing that should have destroyed Joseph brought about his destiny. Be encouraged. God has a good plan for you. No matter what pain you’ve experienced, hold on to Jesus, because He can turn that pain into purpose.

Prayer Requests

You can be an essential part of our ministry by praying for us. Prayer is a powerful weapon, and we value your prayers. If you would like us to pray for you, please email your prayer requests to us. Here are some specifics to pray for:

We thank you in advance for praying for the following:
