Nepal Flood Relief & Long Term Strategy
Rabindra Pastor Support
Paul is helping to lead and mentor a network of 7 churches in the absence of the Senior Pastor of that network, who died in the flood. Rabindra, one of his church planters, will lead locally day in and day out. In fact, the senior pastor of this network died trying to save Rabindra's son's life; he ran toward the floodwaters because he believed his son was in the area.
Paul and Rabindra have been working together for 17 years. Paul will directly mentor Rabindra and then also the other pastors. Paul lives in Kathmandu, but will travel to this area 10 times per month.
Regular monthly support $100 per month and buying him a used motorcycle for $1,300 because his motorcycle was destroyed in the flood.
Opportunity
Monthly Pastor Support: $100 p/mo (fully funded)
Motorcycle: $1,300 (fully funded)
Rebecca Church Rebuilding
Rebecca is the widow of the senior pastor who died. She also has two children. The church she and her husband led was also destroyed in the flood. They are now walking three hours to attend one of the network churches, and have hundreds of believers in the area where their church used to be.
We are purchasing a piece of land for them to rebuild the church that was destroyed. The old land in the flood area is not able to be built on because of the destruction.
Opportunity
Land: $16,000 (fully funded)
Church Construction: $15,000
Nuwakot Housing and Ministry Center Project
Paul has partnered with a pastor in the area where the ministry he leads will secure a 10 year lease on land next to one of the local churches in our network. They plan to build a children's and widows' ministry center and 20 houses for people who lost their homes and everything in the floods.
The ministry center will be the children's ministry for that church, which will allow them to have kid's church at the same time as their adult services and 7 days a week ministry that includes school tutoring, evangelism, discipleship, education, and rescue from trafficking, food/water, and medical care. Paul provides extensive training to help them succeed in children's and youth ministry.
Paul is employing local people from the network and local believers to build the houses and related construction. This is also creating short-term jobs for people. This housing project is entirely connected to the local church, it's going to be powerful.
Opportunity
Lease: $500 p/yr for 10 year lease, $5,000 ($2,500 funded) — $2,500
Houses: $2,800 p/house, $56,000 ($44,800 funded) — $11,200
Ministry Center: $2,800 (fully funded)
Construction Team Expenses: $7,350 (fully funded)
Three Houses Outside Housing Project
Three houses are being built for people whose homes were destroyed. We are building these in areas outside the larger housing project. They are as follows:
-
Rabindra, who pastors this network
-
Suri, a woman who attends a church hours away from the project
-
Rebecca Harka, the widow of the senior pastor who died.
Opportunity
Houses: $2,800 x 3 = $8,400 (fully funded)
Pastor Taxi Business
One of the pastors lost his 20 year old daughter in the floods. She actually died at the Nepal and China border, where you've likely seen the video that has gone around the world. She was in China after graduating from college to help generate income for her family who are church planters.
Her father, who is the pastor, recently purchased a van to operate as a taxi, which also provided income for the family and church. The taxi business will be slow for the next 4 months because bridge infrastructure being destroyed in the floods. We are trusting God for to help him cover 4 months of income during the recovery period.
Opportunity
Pastor Support: $1,800
Paul's Vehicle Upgrade for Mountain Travels and Quality Family Time
The ministry that Paul leads will now be in three areas: Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Nuwakot/Rasuwa (flood area). The driving Paul does is very difficult through mountain areas, involving a lot of off-road travel. His current vehicle is a used Toyota Rav4. It's safe and reliable.
He owes $8,000 on an interest free loan from his sister. His travels look like this: Kathmandu--Nuwakot--walk for 5 hours to visit churches because he can't go further in the Rav4--travel to Chitwan--walk for 5 hours because he can't go further off-road in the Rav4--drive back to Kathmandu.
We are trusting God to pay off the $8,000 interest free loan so he can trade the Rav4 for a used Toyota HiLux truck, which will make his mountain travels safer and save him many hours of walking. This will give him more time for his wife and children and speed up his ability to serve the pastors and the church planting network. The cost to upgrade to a truck is $8,000 which his sister will offer as an interest free loan, or $16,000 would allow him to keep the ministry debt free.
Opportunity
Payoff Rav4: $8,000
Upgrade to HiLux Truck: $8,000
